Beacon x Red Cross: Building Life-Saving Tech for Disaster Response
When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, the American Red Cross faced a coordination nightmare. Thousands of volunteers, dozens of partner organizations, and millions of dollars in aid — all managed through a patchwork of spreadsheets, phone calls, and outdated software systems. Critical information fell through the cracks. Response times suffered. Lives were at stake. It was a wake-up call for the entire disaster response community: the technology had to get better.
Enter Arben Kane, a Salesforce architect and Hello Good club member who had spent years building enterprise platforms for Fortune 500 companies. Kane saw an opportunity to apply the same technology that powers billion-dollar sales operations to the life-and-death work of disaster response. The result was Beacon NGO — a Salesforce-native platform purpose-built for emergency management. Beacon gives organizations like the Red Cross a single source of truth for volunteer coordination, resource allocation, donor management, and real-time field reporting. What used to take hours of phone calls now happens in seconds.
The project brought together an unlikely coalition: the Department of Homeland Security provided funding and requirements, the American Red Cross contributed operational expertise, Salesforce donated platform access and engineering support, and Hello Good's club model provided the specialized talent to actually build it. Kane assembled a team of Salesforce developers, UX designers, and nonprofit operations experts — all club members — who understood both the technical requirements and the human stakes.
Today, Beacon is deployed across multiple Red Cross chapters and has been used in responses to hurricanes, wildfires, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform has coordinated over 50,000 volunteer deployments and managed more than $25 million in disaster relief funds. But for Kane, the most meaningful metric is response time. "In disaster response, minutes matter," he says. "Every minute we save in coordination is a minute that goes to helping someone who just lost their home." Beacon is a testament to what happens when world-class technology talent meets genuine purpose — and it is exactly the kind of project that the Hello Good club was built to make possible.
